Quadkids in Bromley

QuadKidsOn Wednesday 14th July, Kelsey Park Sports College in Beckenham, Kent hosted the inaugural QuadKids event for London Borough of Bromley Year 3 & 4 pupils. The event was jointly organised by Bromley School Sports Partnership and 365 Athletics Academy, the Kent London McCain Athletic Network’s co-ordinator. 120 pupils from 15 local primary schools were given the opportunity to participate in 4 individual events: 50m Sprint, 400m Run, Mini Vortex Howler Throw & Standing Long Jump plus a relay involving all the children. Each participant gained points based on their performance which contributed to their team’s total. Young Sports Leaders from Kelsey Park Sports College, Hayes and Langley Park School for Boys, supported by SSCO’s, assisted in the smooth running of the event by recording the result on a laptop PC and by being excellent event officials and time keepers. The event was endorsed by the Kent London McCain Athletics Network and representatives from Beckenham Running Club, Bexley AC and Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC attended the event. Elspeth Turner from England Athletics was also present & very kindly donated running tops to the top 5 individual boys & girls.

QuadKidsThe schools in attendance were Balgowan, Chelsfield, Chislehurst, Green Street Green, Hawes Down, Hayes, Highfield, Highway, Oak Lodge, Parish, Pickhurst, Poverest, St Johns, Tubbenden & Worsley Bridge.

After a very close competition, Balgowan were the eventual winners, with Parish runners up. Special congratulations should also go to Simon Bye from Highfield and Eloise Locke from Balgowan who were the highest scoring boy and girl and received a voucher for 10 weeks free coaching from 365 Athletics Academy.

QuadKidsTwice a year Bromley primary school children participate in probably the biggest cross country event of its kind in the UK with more than 1200 year 3,4,5 & 6 pupils taking part. Although year 5 & 6 children have a track and field championships to look forward to in the summer there is no such competition for children in years 3 & 4, therefore, it was felt that a QuadKids event would provide an excellent opportunity for children to participate in a fun competitive event.

Due to the positive feedback from the schools who participated in the recent event the Bromley School Sports Partnership plan to hold additional events in 2011 covering school years 3-6. The Kent London McCain Athletic Network will encourage Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham School Sports Partnerships to incorporate QuadKids competitions into their calendar of events for 2011.

These events are vital to local athletics clubs in identifying young talent. The events themselves are ideal for attracting local business sponsorship.
